Go to Camp with Your Grandparent! (Yes, We’re Serious)
Thinking about Grandparents Weekend for your family this summer? This special guest blog from a grandchild will have you packing and planning for the best summer experience!
Written by Lindsay Weisskopf, freshman at Highland Park High School. This summer will be her 6th summer as a camper at Camp Chi.
Seven years ago my grandparents told me and my younger brother that we would be spending a weekend with them at Camp Chi. I had no idea what that meant, but I knew that a weekend with my grandparents would be exciting.
When the weekend finally arrived they picked us up and we headed off to Lake Delton. The car ride was filled with games, songs and food. And before I knew it, we had arrived. We were greeted with a smile and were assigned a room in the lodge. After leaving our stuff in the room, we joined the rest of the families outside for ice breaker events. I was surprised to learn that many of my grandparents’ friends and their grandchildren were there too. The rest of the weekend was a blur of Shabbat services, arts and craft, s’mores, swimming, gaga, fishing, yoga and board games.
Over the past seven years, we’ve been joined by my youngest brother and two cousins. The car ride is definitely more crowded, but the fun has multiplied. I love the family bonding time, and we have too many inside jokes to count. Grandparents Weekend has become a highlight of the summer, and I’m grateful to my grandparents for bringing us every year.
