Innovative Outdoor Space Opens at Bernard Weinger JCC Early Childhood Center
Northbrook, IL – May 12, 2016—JCC Chicago has completely reimagined and rebuilt the outdoor playground at the Bernard Weinger JCC Early Childhood Center in Northbrook.
The new outdoor space is a natural, innovative and imaginative environment that is equal parts classroom and playground, and was made possible through the generosity of The Frank Family Foundation.
Rededicated on May 6, the Laurie Lieberman Playground is a dynamic center for teaching, learning, health, fitness, environmental literacy and community life. Environmentally-friendly climbing equipment, slides and an outdoor stage make the play space functional, fun and inviting for creative play. Other defining elements include an expanded landscape and garden, a science observation area, a dedicated space for music and movement, mud and sand pits, and wood stump seating for outdoor lunching and story time.
Shared Laurie Lieberman, “Eighteen years ago, when the playground was first created, we thought, ‘Wow!’ Now, our family is again amazed by the creativity and vision of the staff and educators at the J.”
“Most activities that can be done indoors can also be done outdoors,” said Nicole Robin, Director of the Early Childhood Center at the Bernard Weinger JCC. “The benefits of a true outdoor classroom are endless. A beautiful, natural, outdoor space enriches children’s physical being, cognitive skills and social/emotional aptitude. Plus, it gives them a better understanding of the world around them.”
