Shatter the Stigma: Teen Voices for Mental Health

When we launched the JCC Teen Mental Health Committee, our mission was clear: break the stigma surrounding mental health, promote emotional wellness, and empower teens to speak up, support each other, and share resources. Since then, this dedicated group has led powerful conversations, created wellness kits, and hosted impactful community mental health fairs.
But this spring, they’re doing something truly special.
In honor of Mental Health Awareness Month, our teens dreamed up a bold, expressive, and meaningful event designed to give their peers a platform to feel seen and heard. And so, the Teen Open Mic Night was born.
And not just anywhere—this event is happening at Madame Zuzu’s, the iconic, artsy, and unapologetically creative venue that’s a dream stage for young voices ready to shine.
Why an open mic night?
Because music, poetry, and art speak where words sometimes can’t. Creative expression helps release emotions, build self-awareness, and connect us to others. It gives teens a way to share their truth—raw, honest, vulnerable—and find support in the process.
This event isn’t just about performances. It’s about presence. About showing up for each other. About creating a space where teens can be exactly who they are—and know they’re not alone.
So what can you expect?
An evening filled with original music, powerful spoken word, and thought-provoking poetry—alongside visual art displays that reflect the real experiences of today’s teens. It’s not just a show; it’s a space where creativity meets community, where everyone is welcome, and where support and self-expression take center stage. And yes, there will be great food and drinks to enjoy while you take it all in.
