Who are the Conversos and Crypto-Jews? Why are there so many in the American Southwest and, particularly, in New Mexico? This presentation will explain the forces that brought Spanish Jews to what was then New Spain in the years following the Expulsion of 1492. Norma Libman, who has been researching the story and interviewing secret Jews for 25 years, will describe the practices Jews used to keep their secrets in Spain and how they brought those practices to the New World and passed them on to their children for generations. In her talk she will also explain why some still keep the secret today and what happens to those who want to return to mainstream Jewish life.
